How should you hold your leg during yoga tree pose?

Tree pose is the one where you stand on one foot with the sole of the other against your inner thigh, right? So when you have that leg raised, should you be pressing the foot into your thigh so your leg is braced, or should you be holding the leg up under its own muscle power, with the foot only lightly resting against your thigh? I ask because so far I’m not flexible enough to get my foot up farther than my calf, and I’m having trouble keeping it up at all, so I’m not sure if I’m doing it wrong, or just not strong enough yet.

The main purpose of tree pose is in maintaining the balance, and the equilibrium of breathing within it, so what your foot is doing is actually secondary. If you can only get to your calf, then you can only get to your calf. Accept that and don’t bring struggle into your practice.
One of the elements that is developed within us when we practice yoga is something called “Samtosha”. This is a Sanskrit word which means “contentment”. We begin to experience that it is only a judgement in our mind that is stopping us being content with what is present in any moment, including where our body is in terms of flexibility.
Enjoy where you are at right now, and with acceptance flows flexibility. Don’t take my word for it, this is part of the 2500 year old Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.
