yoga asanas

What yoga asanas would be good for my mom [Pls read description]?
She suffers from herpes and she has a very severe pain in her lower back and pelvic area when she gets up from lying down. She also has high blood pressure. What asanas should she do?
If she is looking to strengthen her back then I suggest that she try imprint breathing. This will allow her to focus on shifting weight that she carries in the back and moving it to the center.
The Stoop Position or Yogamudrasana- this will help strengthen her back
Half Spinal Twist Position or Ardh Matsyendrasana- this will help strengthen and stretch
Camel Position or Ushtrasana- help stetch and strengthen.
All three of these positions are health oriented poses and should over time help reduce back pain.

Asanas: 608 Yoga Postures
$8.84 DIVIn 1974, the legendary “teacher of teachers” yogi Dharma Mittra photographed himself in 908 yoga postures. He printed each photo as an 8 x 10 and pasted them together to form a poster, creating the Ultimate Yoga Chart as a gift for his teacher, Swami Kailashananda (Yogi Gupta). Asanas collects 708 of those black-and-white photographs, each accompanied by the English name of the pose and the Sanskrit characters, brief commentary, and specific combinations for vinyasa, ashtanga, and Iyengar practice. Because it builds on basic postures, Asanas will appeal to students of any of the 100 yoga styles. In addition, specific sequences for each of the major styles of yoga; for beginning, intermediate, and advanced yoga students; as well as for particular health problems are also featured./div |

Myths of the Asanas
$12.14 Millions of students reap the physical benefits of yoga, assuming the different poses and frequently calling them by their sanskrit names. While many probably know that hanumanasa is named for the Hindu deity Hanuman, fewer know why this is the case. Behind each asana and its corresponding movements is an ancient story about a god, a sage, or sacred animal, much like Aesop''s fables or European folktales. Myths of the Asanas is the first book to compile and retell these ancient stories. Meditating on the tolerance of trees while standing in tree pose can help one become more tolerant. Learning how the disfigured sage Astavakra came to be the teacher of a king can liberate us from anxieties about external appearance and self-imposed limitations. Marveling at the devotion of Hanuman to his lord Rama can serve as a source of spiritual strength and determination. Through discovering mythic tales such as these, readers will add a new dimension to their practice and study of yoga. |

Yoga (Yoga Journal Books)
$15.98 Yoga is everywhere these days: Hollywood stars take their personal instructors with them on location; newspapers and magazines hail yoga as the answer to the unrelenting stress in our society; and gyms everywhere are now offering a dizzying array of classes. The yoga we practice today in the West bears little resemblance to the yoga that began humbly almost 5,000 years ago, but in its rich and varied history, yoga has always evolved to meet the needs of the culture it serves. But what distinguishes this publication are the 400 poses, or asanas, illustrated by artful black-and-white photographs taken especially for this book, that demonstrate the physical postures derived from an ancient Indian tradition. With dozens of stunning foldouts, this book beautifully explores a wide range of yoga with an emphasis on how it touches more than the physical body; the flexibility and stamina achieved on the yoga mat will doubtless transcend to more important aspects of everyday life. Linda Sparrowe’s introduction traces the evolution of yoga, rooted in the devotional and metaphysical teachings of the sacred yoga texts including the Vedas, Upanishads, and the Bhagavad-Gita, and progressing to an in-depth look at the philosophy of Patanjali, the father of modern yoga. Included are brief introductions to the twentieth-century yogis who were influential in making yoga a Western, and indeed a worldwide, obsession. |

Shadow Yoga, Chaya Yoga: The Principles of Hatha Yoga
$10.26 In Shadow Yoga, Chaya Yoga, author Shandor Remete shows how to utilize yoga to enhance all aspects of physical and spiritual health. Focusing specifically on the hatha tradition, the book delves deep into original Sanskrit texts, explaining the theoretical foundation of yoga in clear, encouraging language. Remete describes the shadows noted by classical yoga teachers that block the student, and shows ways to move beyond them. The book covers the key concepts of traditional yoga--the marmas, chakras, vayus (sources of energy), and nadis (flows of energy through the body)--before turning to the yogic techniques that improve their condition and functioning--asana (poses), nauli (abdominal exercises), pranayama (breathing), mudra (gestures), and laya (absorptions). It closes with illustrated sequences of the most important asanas. Shadow Yoga also discusses various little-understood, oft-neglected aspects of yogic training, such as the role of marma points (acupuncture-like energy points) and the influence of the zodiac. Detailed drawings of the body's energy system and its links to these elemental and planetary forces provide a visual guide to these largely unknown areas of yoga. This knowledge, considered essential in Indian yogic traditions, has been almost entirely lost in modern Western schools of yoga. Author Remete restores that information in this beautifully designed book. |

Yoga Mala
$14.48 The seminal treatise and guide to Ashtanga yoga by the living master of this increasingly popular disciplineThere is a yoga boom in America, and Sri K. Pattabhi Jois is at the heart of it. One of the great yoga figures of our time, Jois brought Ashtanga yoga to the West a quarter of a century ago and has been the driving force behind its worldwide dissemination. Based on flowing, energetic movement, Ashtanga and the many forms of vinyasa yoga that grow directly out of it--have become the most widespread and influential styles of practice in the United States today. Mala means "garland" in Sanskrit, and Yoga Mala--a "garland of yoga practice"--is Jois's distillation of Ashtanga. He first outlines the ethical principles and philosophy underlying the discipline and explains its important terms and concepts. Next he guides the reader through Ashtanga's versions of the Sun Salutation and its subsequent sequence of forty-two asanas, or poses, precisely describing how to execute each position and what benefits each provides. Brought into English by Eddie Stern, a student of Jois's for twelve years and director of the Patanjali Yoga Shala in New York City, Yoga Mala will be an indispensable handbook for students and teachers of yoga for years to come. |

The Spiritual Roots of Yoga
$10.58 Rather than a hatha how-to guide with asanas and step-by-step instructions, The Spiritual Roots of Yoga explains yoga's origin and underlying philosophy. The book dives straight to the heart of the yogic tradition embodied in the figure of Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita, an understanding broadened through an examination of Patanjali's Yoga Sutra. It then provides the framework for an accessible comparison between yoga and Christian, Buddhist, and other systems of thought. The author of several acclaimed interfaith studies, Ravi Ravindra writes from a deep understanding of not only the philosophy but the context from which yoga evolved, as well as its standing within the community of religious thought and practice, offering practitioners and other spiritual pilgrims a deeper appreciation of the tradition. |

Bikram Yoga
$19.48 Bikram, the "hot yoga" program, has been heating up the yoga world lately, and its founder probably has something to do with it: The outspoken, dramatic, and always controversial Bikram Choudhury has garnered a lot of attention with his version of hatha yoga that some yogis think unorthodox: In his classes, students are stuck in a room heated to at least 105 degrees doing a structured program of 26 asanas with a sergeant–like instructor––and they love it. Bikram Yoga will emulate that same energy. With his take–no–prisoners philosophy, Bikram describes how the program can reap great medical, physical, and spiritual benefits––the poses work out every part of the body, all of which can help alleviate many common ailments, from asthma to back pain. (Photographs will accompany each pose.) In addition, the book offers the best ways to incorporate eastern philosophy into a western lifestyle and tips on how yoga can cultivate "a union between body and spirit." Simply put, you don't have to meditate passively to reap the benefits of yoga. |

Hatha Yoga
$3.98 The author of the popular Ashtanga Yoga now presents all the fundamentals of another forceful form of yoga that will tone the body, clear the mind, and enhance the spirit: Hatha. With 100 color photographs for instruction and inspiration, Juliet Pegrum demonstrates Hatha's asanas (postures) and pranayama (breath control), and reveals why this type of yoga was considered a gift to mankind from the Hindu god Shiva. The program combines static and dynamic poses that benefit the body in every way. The static ones massage the internal organs, stimulate the glands, and bring stillness to the mind. The dynamic combinations enliven circulation, remove energy blocks, and warm up the body in preparation for more difficult asanas. Both types are broken down and thoroughly explained: preliminary stretches; standing poses; cool and refreshing sitting poses; spirals to remove stiffness; balances that develop lightness and grace; restorative supine and prone positions; invigorating back bends; and inversions that provide a new perspective on the world. The pranayamas help tame the mind, while the meditation practice breaks down mental barriers. The Spiritual Roots of Yoga
$13.48 Rather than a hatha how-to guide with asanas and step-by-step instructions, The Spiritual Roots of Yoga explains yoga’s origin and underlying philosophy. The book dives straight to the heart of the yogic tradition embodied in the figure of Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita, an understanding broadened through an examination of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra. |

Yoga for Body, Breath, and Mind
$13.98 Here is a practical and accessible introduction to the full, multifaceted richness of the yoga tradition. While most yoga books focus only on poses, Yoga for Body, Breath, and Mind integrates the three fundamental elements of a complete yoga practice: asanas (poses), pranayama (breathing practices), and meditation. A. G. Mohan, an internationally respected teacher, also explains essential philosophical concepts and offers the yogic perspective on health and healing. With step-by-step instructions and abundant illustrations, Yoga for Body, Breath, and Mind is the type of comprehensive guide that will be of interest to every yoga practitioner. The author explains that often when we feel stress or a sense that life has gotten out of control, it's not because of life events themselves, but because the state of our own mind has become chaotic and fragmented. When we are in a state of what he calls "personal integration," we are centered, contented, and able to see people and events in life as they truly are. In this state, people are most able to make decisions and take actions that are clear and positive. In Yoga for Body, Breath, and Mind Mohan provides a structured yoga program to help readers cultivate this state of balance and integration. The book also includes an introduction to the practice of yoga therapy. |

Hatha Yoga : 6130258577

Hatha Yoga, also called Hatha Vidya, is a system of Yoga introduced by Yogi Swatmarama, a sage of 15th century India, and compiler of the Hatha Yoga Pradipika. In this treatise Swatmarama introduces Hatha Yoga as preparatory stage of physical purification that the body practices for higher meditation. The Asanas and Pranayama in Raja Yoga were what the Hindu Yogis used to physically train their body for long periods of meditation. This practice is called shatkarma. The word Hatha is a compound of the words Ha and Tha meaning sun and moon referring to Praana and Apaana, and also to the principal nadis (energy channels) of the subtle body that must be fully operational to attain a state of dhyana or samdhi. According to the Monier Moneir-Williams Sanskrit Dictionary, the word hatha means forceful. It is a strong practice done for purification. In other respects Hatha yoga follows the same principles as the Raaja Yoga of Patanjali including moral restraint yama and spiritual observances niyama. Yoga Anatomy : 0736062785
$12.55 With clear, expert instruction and full-color, detailed anatomical drawings, Yoga Anatomy depicts the most common asanas to provide a deeper understanding of the structures and principles underlying each movement and of yoga itself. This is an essential book for any serious student of yoga who delights in the details of asana.brYoga Journal - October 2007brFor a long time it was difficult to get anatomy books that were specifically designed for Yoga teachers. Anatomical textbooks were useful but did not help with questions directly related to Yoga. After 2003, however, a row of books were published that addressed Yoga anatomy....Then, in the spring of this year, L. Kaminoff's Yoga Anatomy was published. Like other books it is very helpful because it shows the use of specific muscles in certain poses. Unlike other books it also addresses questions of joint action, muscles working and lengthening, obstacles, breathing and variations. For a slim (and not very expensive) book the author has been able to compress a lot of information into a concise, clear and instructive format. I have found Yoga Anatomy to be a very helpful resource book, and I rarely prepare a class without consulting it.brOda Lindner -- a YAA certified Yoga teacherbrNovember 2007 edition of Bridge, (the publication of the Yoga Association of Alberta, Canada)brPlenty of books outline the fundamentals of yoga, but how many provide an illustrated anatomical guide to postures, movements and breathing techniques which blends anatomy with yoga moves? Yoga Anatomy offers a visual approach that allows learners to see how all the muscles interact during various poses. Chapters survey joint actions, poses, and how yoga helps various conditions. Any library strong in yoga or new age will find this anatomical approach specific and invaluable.pDiane C. Yoga Matrix : 1591791278
$57.78 ... Freeman deciphers for us how the mechanics of yoga operate in our day-to-day lives. The Yoga Matrix Within the Yoga Sutra, an ancient text about the practice of yoga, only two verses mention asanas, or the postures we commonly associate with yoga in the West. Patanjali, the legendary sage and author of this 2,250-year-old work, was concerned not solely with physical development, or even mental development. In fact the original purpose of yoga was-and remains-to function as a complete spiritual path where the body serves as a gateway to enlightenment. On The Yoga Matrix, the renowned instructor Richard Freeman immerses you in the rich teachings and sutras that inform the many schools of yoga, and reveals how the body can serve as the ultimate laboratory, temple, and place of pilgrimage for spiritual inquiry. Looking back 5,000 years, Freeman uncovers the living roots of yoga philosophy, and observes how they have grown into many schools, techniques, and philosophies that are united by a vast, interpenetrating matrix which holds the key to understanding yoga's full depth and greater purpose. Freeman first traveled to India in 1968, where he began a lifetime of study with the living masters of yoga and its mysteries. Now he teaches these authentic lessons and their original subtleties, with the questions and concerns of the serious Western student in mind. What is the yogic view of reality? Why was yoga first developed? How is progress traditionally measured? What are the principles of working with the body's subtle energy? Where do I start? From profound concepts at the center of this ancient cosmic philosophy, to the cherished teaching stories and chants that enrich its daily practice, here is a complete audio curriculum with the power to catalyze your daily yoga practice. |
