what is the difference between Iyengar yoga and hatha yoga?

I basically agree with LaJeh, in that Iyengar is a specific type of Hatha yoga.

The confusion probably occurs when people not only use the term in the connotation of a specific style, but also use it to refer to only the practice of asana (poses).

These days, there are so many styles of Hatha yoga, some of which being quite different in technique from each other, that especially in Western culture, the term does not convey much other than to indicate some method of asana practice.

As I understand it, a traditional Hatha yoga practice was not simply the practice of asana, but also pranayam and meditation.
Very frequently in the West, people use ‘Hatha yoga’ (and just ‘yoga’) to refer to only asana.

If I saw a class described simply as a ‘Hatha yoga’ class, I would assume it was asana taught from perspective of no particular style, and thus, might indicate an instructor of minimal training.

He authored dozens of New Thought books under numerous pseudonyms, some of which are likely still unknown today, including "Yogi Ramacharaka" and "Theron Q. Dumont."
