about yoga

What are some good books about yoga that I can find in Chapters?
I’ve just started yoga today using a website, but I would like to know some books I could buy about starting yoga. Also, is my back supposed to hurt just from SITTING? I knew I was out of shape but COME ON. Ouch. Help is appreciated!
Hi,
I’ve tried so many different diets in the last 10 years that I can say now, they don’t work!
A few months ago, I came across a great product for weight loss and like many others I was skeptical about it. But I really wanted to lose weight and I tried it. The results were excellent and I lost 20 pounds in 2 months. I felt fantastic and I dropped another 5 pounds safely. That’s why I recommend you check this product at http://www.fit-thin.info where they have a free trial and you only pay 5.49$ shipping and handling.
Good luck!

Yoga
$26.95 The Yoga Sutra, dating from about the third century A.D., distills the essentials of a complex system of physical and spiritual discipline into not quite two hundred brief aphorisms. Yoga is at the heart of all meditative practice in Asia, yet until now there has been no first-rate English version of this primary text. Barbara Stoler Miller's translation admirably fills that gap - her clear, strong style and sensitive phrasing convey every nuance of Patanjali's words, and her commentary offers invaluable guidance to anyone seeking to understand how yoga describes our relation to the world. |

$7.98 Carol Blackman and Elise Browning Miller offer step-by-step instructions for learning traditional yoga poses to improve strength and flexibility. Based on their original book, Life Is a Stretch, this new edition gives readers more information about using yoga stretching practices to reduce stress and increase vitality. These simple tension-relieving routines-that can be done at home or in the office-are easy to incorporate into everyday life. Yoga: Anytime, Anywhere presents new practices, such as a 15-minute routine to stretch the whole body. Also presented are seven routines, one for every day of the week, each focusing on a specific body area or on particular poses, such as backbends and twists. The authors demonstrate how readers can use these routines to work out their entire body, or personalize their yoga practice by repeating selected exercises. |

Morning Yoga, Evening Yoga
$47.95 MORNING YOGA, EVENING YOGA presents two sequences of postures for today. One, the Surya Namaskar or 'Salutation to the Sun', is probably the earliest such sequence in the tradition. The second of them, Chandra Namaskar, is much more recent and less well-known. It translates as 'Salutation to the Moon'. Where Surya Namaskar is traditionally an early morning routine to awaken the body, Chandra Namaskar is to still the body before sleeping. MORNING YOGA, EVENING YOGA appeals to both the larks and the owls among us. It is designed to help owls face the morning, and larks cope with the evening - to help both types become more balanced in their routine and get more out of each precious day. In addition, Janita writes with a rare depth of understanding about the history of the sequences. She enlarges on traditional teaching and provides alternative postures with authority. |

Jivamukti Yoga
$15.48 The long-awaited, complete guide to the popular, vigorous American method of yoga that is deeply rooted in ancient wisdom and scriptures“In this day and age of health and fitness trends, it is assuring to know that Sharon and David encourage their students to draw inspiration from the classical texts of Yoga and timeless scriptural sources. What I appreciate so much about David and Sharon is how they help their Yoga students to understand and appreciate the wisdom of all the great saints and jivamuktas who have contributed to raising consciousness. Ultimately, it is Self-Realization, that is the true goal of Yoga.”–SRI SWAMI SATCHIDANANDACreators of the extremely popular Jivamukti Yoga method and cofounders of the New York City studios where it is taught, Sharon Gannon and David Life present their unique style of yoga for the first time in book form. As they explain their intensely physical and spiritual system of flowing postures, they provide inspiring expert instruction to guide you in your practice.Unlike many books about yoga, Jivamukti Yoga focuses not only on the physical postures but also on how they evolved–the origins of the practices in yoga’s ancient sacred texts and five-thousand-year-old traditions–the psychotherapeutic benefits that accrue with a steady practice, and the spiritual power that is set free when energy flows throughout the mind and body. Jivamukti Yoga, which means “soul liberation,” guides your body and soul into spiritual freedom, physical strength, peace of mind, better health, and Self-realization–the ultimate goal of any practice. Gannon and Life help you understand each of the practices that comprise the yoga path to enlightenment:AHIMSA–The Way of Compassion: choosing nonviolence, respecting all life, practicing vegetarianism, living free of prejudiceASANA–The Way of Connection to the Earth: postures and sequences, breathing, transforming energy, understanding the bandhasKARMA–The Way of Action: creating good karma, giving thanksNADAM–The Way of Sacred Music: appreciating the sacred sounds of yogaMEDITATION–The Way of the Witness: how to sit still and move inwardBHAKTI–The Way of Devotion to God: living with love, grace, and peaceWhatever yoga you practice, Jivamukti Yoga will help you to strengthen and deepen that practice and lead you onto a path of spiritual clarity and self-discovery.“If there is only one book you read about the practice of Yoga, this should be the one. Sharon and David are deeply dedicated students and teachers of Yoga who have the rare capacity to translate their profound understanding to the reader. This book is for anyone who wishes to find transformation through Yoga. I’m grateful for their work and teaching.”–STEPHAN RECHTSCHAFFEN, MD Co-founder & CEO, Omega Institute |

Yoga Body
$8.95 Yoga is so prevalent in the modern world--practiced by pop stars, taught in schools, and offered in yoga centers, health clubs, and even shopping malls--that we take its presence, and its meaning, for granted. But how did the current yoga boom happen? And is it really rooted in ancient Indian practices, as many of its adherents claim? In this groundbreaking book, Mark Singleton calls into question many commonly held beliefs about the nature and origins of postural yoga (?sana) and suggests a radically new way of understanding the meaning of yoga as it is practiced by millions of people across the world today. Singleton shows that, contrary to popular belief, there is no evidence in the Indian tradition for the kind of health and fitness-oriented ?sana practice that dominates the global yoga scene of the twenty-first century. Singleton's surprising--and surely controversial--thesis is that yoga as it is popularly practiced today owes a greater debt to modern Indian nationalism and, even more surprisingly, to the spiritual aspirations of European bodybuilding and early 20th-century women's gymnastic movements of Europe and America, than it does to any ancient Indian yoga tradition. This discovery enables Singleton to explain, as no one has done before, how the most prevalent forms of postural yoga, like Ashtanga, Bikram and "Hatha" yoga, came to be the hugely popular phenomena they are today. Drawing on a wealth of rare documents from archives in India, the UK and the USA, as well as interviews with the few remaining, now very elderly figures in the 1930s Mysore ?sana revival, Yoga Body turns the conventional wisdom about yoga on its head. |

Happy Yoga
$12.48 After studying yoga in India and traveling all over the world with traditional Vedantic masters, Steve Ross returned to his hometown of Los Angeles with a broadened point of view of what yoga could be. He was surprised to find that yoga classes at home were missing the humor, joy, and celebration that fueled his Eastern studies. Instead of expanding and enhancing the joy of being, Western yoga classes focused obsessively on correcting body positions and developing a picture-perfect physique. Determined to keep his yoga practice true to cultivating bliss and inner radiance, Ross started his own yoga studio and has created a yoga movement in Los Angeles that is, to put it simply, revolutionary. Ross lives and teaches according to his belief that the secret to yoga is not obsessing over whether your feet are parallel or whether you can bend as far as the person on your left can, but about transcending the serious and allowing joy into your life, your body, your mind, and hopefully your yoga practice itself. It's about lightening up. In Happy Yoga, Ross reveals that everyone is inherently happy, but that our true self is shadowed and concealed by the layers of worry that, through habit, become our daily thoughts. In each chapter, he examines one of our seven greatest human fears -- depression, ill health, loss of love, career failure, war, death, and emotional stasis -- and uses yoga wisdom to explain how to strip away these worries to reach your core of calm radiant joy. By sharing his system of yoga postures, diet, meditation, music, supplements, and philosophy, Ross has effected profound physical and mental changes in both his life and the lives of his students. Ross's power is that he goes back to the source -- five thousand years of ancient yogic wisdom -- and decodes the abstract Eastern ideas for a Western audience. Happy Yoga is not just a set of movements and facts to consume, it is a way of shifting your awareness to bring the spirit of yoga into each movement, each meal, each relationship, each thought, and each breath. With love and joyful abandon, Ross offers us a new way to practice and live yoga. The result is profound calm, a dramatic release of anxiety and pain, and the realization that there really is nothing to worry about. |

Yoga Morality
$15.98 Explores Yogic philosophy and practice to discover what it means to be a mature, moral person. Counterbalancing the current trend toward overpopulariziation. Yoga is not about the glamour of its physical postures or fabulous states of meditation. Yoga, which lies at the heart of Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism, is a spiritual tradition is concerned with personal growth and the ultimate goal of complete self-transcendence to the point of perfect inner freedom. The core process of Yoga, which conducts the yogic practitioner from a state of inauthentic existence to authentic being, is unglamorous and proceeds through the gradual, quiet transformation of one?s body-mind and everyday life. It is impossible to be a good yogi or yoginî without also being a morally mature individual. |

Aleph-Bet Yoga
$10.48 Jewish Yoga? Yes! "If you are curious about hatha yoga, Aleph-Bet Yoga provides a safe introduction to the basic yoga postures and techniques. If you are one of the tens of thousands of Jews who already practice hatha yoga, Aleph-Bet Yoga will connect your yoga to something explicitly Jewish. With its Jewish content and intent, Aleph-Bet Yoga will enhance rather than interfere with your religious identity." —from the Introduction Combine the ancient practice of hatha yoga with the shapes and mystical meanings of the Hebrew letters to enhance your physical health and deepen your spiritual life. Can yoga be Jewish? Yes! By blending traditional hatha yoga postures and the forms of the Hebrew aleph-bet, yoga teacher Steven Rapp shows how you can use this ancient health practice to deepen your Jewish spirituality. Aleph-Bet Yoga shows us how to: --Integrate the meaning of each Hebrew letter with the common name of the corresponding hatha yoga pose. --Connect all twenty-seven Hebrew letters with hatha yoga poses that correspond to the shapes of the letters. --Weave together the meaning of each Hebrew letter with the Sanskrit word for the yoga pose and a biblical phrase in meditation. As we move our bodies through the Hebrew aleph-bet, turning toward the inner meaning of the letters, we can tap into the deep connections between our body, mind, and spirit. Drawing on the sacred texts and mystical writings of Judaism, combined with the insights of yoga teacher Steven Rapp, Aleph-Bet Yoga is an East-meets-West experience for our whole selves. The Yoga Mamas
$3.48 They're pregnant. They're glamorous. They're blissfully balanced. Or maybe that's all just a pose... Laura is pregnant. She is stressed. She is exhausted. So she takes a deep, yogic breath, forgets about her husband, leaves her cramped apartment...and joins the Prada-clad celebrities and socialites at the most elite yoga center in the city. She figures she is a few tax brackets too short of fitting in. But she finds herself befriended by four huge-hearted, fabulously pregnant women who prove her wrong. Soon they are exchanging birthing plans and baby names and dirty secrets about their significant others. Everything is falling into place. Until she discovers one of them has a secret so big it just might burst their blissful yoga bubble. From The Yoga Mamas: Gigi led the way to the restaurant with her belly. At her side, Isla, too, thrust her bare mid-section defiantly out to the front, as if daring anyone to comment. Susan, Margaret, and I followed behind them, and the sidewalks opened up before us like the parting of the Red Sea. Five pregnant women in SoHo are an arresting sight. People scuttled out of our way. Across the street they stopped to look. We were loud, large, and in charge. I felt a surge of power. With my new, super-sized pals, I no longer viewed the streets as an obstacle course of aggressive shoppers and dog walkers. SoHo is ours, I thought with glee, as we approached the corner of West Broadway and Prince and burst through the doors of the Healthy Harvest. |

Happy Yoga: 7 Reasons Why There's Nothing to Worry About
$6.48 Los Angeles's yoga guru to the stars offers a practical and easygoing guide to achieving bliss through yoga--and explains why there is nothing to worry about.pAfter studying yoga in India and traveling all over the world with traditional Vedantic masters, Steve Ross returned to his hometown of Los Angeles with a broadened point of view of what yoga could be. He was surprised to find that yoga classes at home were missing the humor, joy, and celebration that fueled his Eastern studies. Instead of expanding and enhancing the joy of being, Western yoga classes focused obsessively on correcting body positions and developing a picture-perfect physique. Determined to keep his yoga practice true to cultivating bliss and inner radiance, Ross started his own yoga studio and has created a yoga movement in Los Angeles that is, to put it simply, revolutionary.pRoss lives and teaches according to his belief that the secret to yoga is not obsessing over whether your feet are parallel or whether you can bend as far as the person on your left can, but about transcending the serious and allowing joy into your life, your body, your mind, and hopefully your yoga practice itself. It's about lightening up.pIn Happy Yoga, Ross reveals that everyone is inherently happy, but that our true self is shadowed and concealed by the layers of worry that, through habit, become our daily thoughts. In each chapter, he examines one of our seven greatest human fears -- depression, ill health, loss of love, career failure, war, death, and emotional stasis -- and uses yoga wisdom to explain how to strip away these worries to reach your core of calm radiant joy. By sharing his system of yoga postures, diet, meditation, music, supplements, and philosophy, Ross has effected profound physical and mental changes in both his life and the lives of his students.pRoss's power is that he goes back to the source -- five thousand years of ancient yogic wisdom -- and decodes the abstract Eastern ideas fo@ë…¸Qìÿ¾Úð |

Dream Yoga : 1595943234
$19.34 The spiritual practice consists of meditation and dream yoga. Meditation and dream yoga are two sides of the same thing. If you nevertheless should try to discriminate, then you about meditation can say, that the three aspects of meditation are relaxfullness, awareness and heartfullness. Dream Yoga is shortly said about realizing the illusory aspect of life and death. Normally Dream Yoga is understood as practising meditation during sleep, about realizing the illusory aspects of dreams, and about achieving special states in sleep, such as lucidity and astrality. But dream yoga is also about realizing the illusory aspect of the waking life, both ones own thougth-distortions, but also the thougth-distortions of society (the book includes fx some very critical articles on the Zeitgeist of New Age and coaching). Finally Dream Yoga is about practising meditation during suffering, and during the deathprocess. Through 18 articles Morten Tolboll draws a map over the spiritual journey through the dreamlabyrint of life and death. In this map he shows both dangers and pitfalls, as well as pathfinders and trail markers. The map is in that way intended to function as a help so that people can find the dreamtracks and songlines in the artwork of their lifes.Dream Yoga is understood as practicing meditation during sleep, realizing the illusory aspects of dreams, and achieving special states in sleep, such as lucidity and astrality. Through 18 articles Tolboll draws a map over the spiritual journey through life and death. |

The Woman's Book of Yoga and Health
$19.48 The Woman's Book of Yoga and Health is the first comprehensive book about women's health issues and how to treat them with yoga. The authors offer a complete yoga program for general health as well as pose sequences that address specific health problems—all in the Iyengar tradition, which targets health needs more than other forms of yoga. For example, in the first part of the book, Patricia Walden has organized three chapters showing yoga poses with clear instructions that tell how to get into each pose and describe its benefits: chapter one is the Essential Sequence for all women, and includes modifications for people who cannot or should not do all the poses; chapter two is the Restorative Sequence for stress relief and relaxation; chapter three contains advanced poses that energize and tone. The second part is presented in four sections that broadly represent the stages of a woman's life: teen years and early twenties, later twenties and thirties, midlife, and wisdom years. Each section contains chapters offering specific information about a particular health issue from author Linda Sparrowe, as well as sequences of yoga poses from Patricia Walden that address the problem. For example, the back care chapter includes information about common back problems and their causes (scoliosis, arthritis, lordosis, sciatica, kyphosis, among others) with an emphasis on: emotional and psychological roots of some back problems; physiological information about the spine and back muscles; general information about how yoga addresses different areas of the back; and finally, Patricia Walden's sequences of poses that target different back problems with the goal of not only relieving back pain but of strengthening, and healing old injuries and misalignments. Sections of the book include: Teens and Early 20s: Eating disorders, menstrual health, immune support 20s and 30s: Back care, pregnancy, headaches Midlife: Depression, menopause, digestion Wisdom Years: Osteoporosis, postmenopause, the heart The final section of the book includes listings of yoga centers, instructional videos, yoga equipment, and where to go for more information about yoga. |

Yoga Matrix : 1591791278
$57.78 ... Freeman deciphers for us how the mechanics of yoga operate in our day-to-day lives. The Yoga Matrix Within the Yoga Sutra, an ancient text about the practice of yoga, only two verses mention asanas, or the postures we commonly associate with yoga in the West. Patanjali, the legendary sage and author of this 2,250-year-old work, was concerned not solely with physical development, or even mental development. In fact the original purpose of yoga was-and remains-to function as a complete spiritual path where the body serves as a gateway to enlightenment. On The Yoga Matrix, the renowned instructor Richard Freeman immerses you in the rich teachings and sutras that inform the many schools of yoga, and reveals how the body can serve as the ultimate laboratory, temple, and place of pilgrimage for spiritual inquiry. Looking back 5,000 years, Freeman uncovers the living roots of yoga philosophy, and observes how they have grown into many schools, techniques, and philosophies that are united by a vast, interpenetrating matrix which holds the key to understanding yoga's full depth and greater purpose. Freeman first traveled to India in 1968, where he began a lifetime of study with the living masters of yoga and its mysteries. Now he teaches these authentic lessons and their original subtleties, with the questions and concerns of the serious Western student in mind. What is the yogic view of reality? Why was yoga first developed? How is progress traditionally measured? What are the principles of working with the body's subtle energy? Where do I start? From profound concepts at the center of this ancient cosmic philosophy, to the cherished teaching stories and chants that enrich its daily practice, here is a complete audio curriculum with the power to catalyze your daily yoga practice. |

Yoga in Modern India
$26.37 This is the first time Indian Modern Yoga has received such sustained, in-depth treatment by a reputable and well-informed scholar. Much of the book is quite accessible to the general reader, and many of Alter''s more theoretical and analytical interpretations of modern understandings of yoga, health, medicine, the body, and truth claims are novel and stimulating. Highly recommended. --Elizabeth De Michelis, Director, Dharam Hinduja Institute of Indic Research, Cambridge University Yoga in Modern India is a mine of thought-provoking propositions in regard to the historiography of classical and modern writing on yoga. Well written, it provides detailed and frequently provocative analyses of particular yogic ideas and practices that contribute to a more sophisticated discussion about the status of modern yoga in its various guises over the last one-and-a-half centuries. --Waltraud Ernst, University of Southampton, author of Plural Medicine, Tradition, and Modernity, 1800-2000 |

Yoga On The Moon And Beyond
$10.34 Congratulations! You're holding the world's first off-planet yoga manual! And believe it or not, this book contains over five new schools of yoga that were single-handedly discovered by Joel Goldman while staring at the cosmos one evening. From life aboard the International Space Station today to the forthcoming manned missions to the moon and Mars, mankind is moving out into space and adjusting to different ways of life outside Earth's environment. Goldman explores extraterrestrial travel and shows that not only can yoga help us adjust to it, but that the frontiers of yoga can be pioneered outside the confines of gravity. Whether you're a budding astronaut new to yoga, or a budding yogi new to space, this is the book for you! Anyone curious about both will enjoy this humorous and enthusiastic journey into near-orbit, the near future, and beyond! Joel Goldman's interest in space missions and comedy began early in life. He first studied yoga while traveling in Nepal during college, and his fascination with it drew him back to India soon after. Unable to decide between yoga and space, he became a chiropractor instead. Goldman is working on a number of sequels to this work including: Martial Arts on the Moon and Beyond, Golf on the Moon and Beyond, and SCUBA diving on the Moon and Beyond. For now, though, he's busy cleaning his telescope so he can get a better handle on what's going on out there. |

Yoga Zone [4 Pack] -
$34.99 Includes:Yoga Zone: Introduction to Yoga (1997) Yoga Zone: Conditioning & Stress Release (1997) Yoga Zone: Meditation - Two Complete Sessions (1998) Yoga Zone: Flexibility & Tone (1999) Yoga Zone: Introduction to Yoga From BMG Video this Introduction to Yoga is the first step into the realm of life long fitness and well being. While yoga and its applications is an age-old practice, Yogi Alan Finger only needs 55-minutes to start you down the path of enlightenment. With soothing sounds and gentle routines, this is the best place for the newcomer to begin. Like any new sport or hobby, the basics are essential to laying a proper foundation and this tape is paramount in this aspect. With step-by-step instruction on breathing, stretching, and technique, this workout is sure to reduce stress while increasing flexibility and stamina when the student is ready to advance to the next grade. ~ C. Dwayne Smith, All Movie Guide Yoga Zone: Conditioning & Stress Release The true beauty of the ancient art of yoga is its availability to all, young and old, fit or otherwise. The foundation of yoga is breath, and Alan Finger's soothing and gently encouraging style will help viewers achieve the right breathing for optimum yoga-induced stress release. Easy stretching exercises increase flexibility, which along with relaxation and longevity is the goal of good yoga. Several challenging yoga positions will guide viewers to the next plane of their physical conditioning without ever abandoning the gentle pace. This video is not about extra-heavy perspiration but rather endorses a "no pain, yes gain" approach to physical activity. ~ Leslie Birdwell, All Movie Guide Yoga Zone: Meditation - Two Complete Sessions Instructor Alan Finger leads participants through a complete yoga program that focuses on the meditative aspects of this increasingly popular form of exercise. He shows how breathing techniques and certain positions can help people to reduce stress and to gain a sense of peace and contentment with the world. ~ Sarah Block, All Movie Guide Yoga Zone: Flexibility & Tone This is yet another excellent video from yoga master Alan Finger, who runs several studios in New York. Just a touch more difficult than Introduction to Yoga, this tape, as the title suggests, focuses on poses that increase muscle strength and flexibility. Some basic poses are the same as in Introduction to Yoga -- potted palm, cat pose, downward dog and mountain pose, for example -- Finger introduces some variations. The lunge here is practiced with the torso upright, and in addition to sun salutations, there is also the more complex sun worship. Other poses include scale, triangle and the squt. Finger safely guides the student through each move with clear-cut instruction and his gentle humor makes them all very non-intimidating -- even that dreaded cross-legged hip-opener that some instructors call "the pose of nobility." As always, Finger's non-mystical approach makes this tape accessible to everyon |
